NASA plans to use the LED lamp to culture the vegetables before the end of this year

According to the British on-line version of “Daily Mail ” news on the September 11th that NASA  plans to provide the International Space Station astronauts with the edible vegetables grown in space before the end of the year , the plant cultivation of the space program expects to firstly cultivate six batches of lettuce ,which the pink LED lights will provide with light for photosynthesis .

Foreign media reports that NASA will begin trying to grow vegetables in the satellite orbit on December. The first batch of vegetables will be six ordinary lettuce, the pink LED light will be used as light source , which is expected to grow the extent that can harvest within a month .

NASA experiments have previously provable that zero gravity environment does not affect the growth of these vegetables . But there is still a problem to be solved is that the growth process may be bacterial contamination – produce some cosmic microorganisms. So the first batch of lettuce before being eaten by the astronauts will undergo a rigorous and comprehensive examination . If the first round of test results is all normal , VEGGIE plan could expand the scale of the international space station to get a long-term food supply. This is the first step towards the establishment of a ” self station ” . Meanwhile , VEGGIE also provide the astronauts with some of the so-called ” horticultural therapy” to relieve physical and mental stress, relieve depression .
